About Delhi

Delhi is the second largest metropolis in India after Mumbai. Located in northern India, Delhi has the political status of a federally administered union territory known as the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

Delhi has been the capital of sevral empires in ancient India and a major city in the old trade routes going from northwest India to the Gangetic plains. Many ancient monuments, archaeological sites and remains of national importance have been erected in its history.

National events and holidays have a great improtance and influence on Delhi’s life. National events such as Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti (Gandhi's birthday) are celebrated here with great enthusiasm. On India's Independence Day (15 August) the Prime Minister of India addresses the nation from the Red Fort. Most Delhiites celebrate the day by flying kites, which are considered a symbol of freedom.
