Poland became free of Soviet domination in 1989, after 40 years of communism. The country still has the austere atmosphere of the former Eastern Block. Nonetheless, it is an excellent destination for culture and nature lovers. Poland has a large number of castles, palaces and magnificent countryside. Northern Poland has beaches and lakes, the centre of the country is dominated by huge forests and the south is mainly mountainous.
