When you take a flight to Sweden, you may have the wonderful cities of Stockholm or Gothenburg in your sights with their beautiful unspoilt historic buildings and clean, safe streets. But historic Sweden goes back much further than that. In the south of Sweden there is Götaland, a much fought-over piece of land on the border with Denmark. It contains well-preserved remains of Danish Viking settlements.
Choose a flight to Sweden and land at the capital, Stockholm, on the Baltic Sea and you will find an attractive old city centre built on a collection of islands, joined together by water and bridges. Stockholm has much for culture lovers to enjoy.
On an island in Lake Mälaren, to the west of Stockholm, there is Birka, an old settlement that grew into a mediaeval trading centre and is considered to be the birthplace of Sweden. In the north of Sweden, there is Norrland, a sparsely populated region with pine forests, snowfields and rocky outcrops.
