Special Assistance


Special information on the carriage of disabled passengers and passengers with reduced mobility

Brussels Airlines is carrying disabled passengers and passengers with reduced mobility in agreement with the EU Regulation N°1107/2006 on the rights of disabled passengers and passengers with reduced mobility. In accordance with the European regulation, customers must notify Brussels Airlines of their assistance requirement at least 48 hours before departure.
The services are available across the whole Brussels Airlines network when you travel on flights operated by Brussels Airlines.
All cabin crew have received disability awareness training.

What is a ’disabled person’ or ‘person with reduced mobility’? ( EC no1107/2006 art 2) :

Any person whose mobility when using transport is reduced due to any physical disability (sensory or locomotor, permanent or temporary), intellectual disability or impairment, or any other cause of disability, or age, and whose situation needs appropriate attention and the adaptation to his or her particular needs of the service made available to all passengers.

When to request?

Medical assistance for passengers with reduced mobility and/or sick passengers is available for Brussels Airlines operated flights. The request must be made at least 48 hours before departure. Requests coming in after that time will be handled if possible, but cannot be assured.

Reservation:

In case you need special assistance, you are required to contact Brussels Airlines to notify us of your special needs
at the moment of reservation or at least 48 hours before your departure.

Passengers with certain medical conditions and passengers requiring special care during the flight are required to complete our MEDIF form if:

  • they are actually under a doctor's care  / if their medical condition is not stable

  • they suffer from an ilness

  • they have recently been in a hospital

  • they recently had an operation

  • they need to travel on a stretcher / bed

  • they need oxygen therapy during the flight

The first part of this document needs to be filled out by the passenger or family.

The second part needs to be filled out by the treating doctor.

Medical clearance is also required if:

  • a passenger has a mental disability and cannot be accompanied

  • a passenger is more than 34 weeks pregnant on the moment of travelling

The crew cannot assist with breathing, actual eating or administer medication.

SOME CATEGORIES OF PASSENGERS NEEDING SPECIAL ASSISTANCE

Passengers needing wheelchair assistance:

A special in-flight wheelchair is available on board of our aircraft Airbus A330 for passengers with reduced mobility. For safety reasons, crewmembers are not authorized to lift passengers between the cabin seat and the wheelchair or to assist passengers during the visit to the lavatory. The assistance is limited in moving to the toilet facilities if required.

Blind passengers or passengers with impaired vision:

Upon request, we will provide an escort service at the airport.
Please inform us when you make your reservation that an assistance dog will travel with you on your flight.
The transport of certified assistance dogs in cabin is free of charge. The dog's owner must however provide for all the necessary equipment for travelling, such as a leash, muzzle.
Please note that in several countries (e.g. the UK) special regulations apply to the entry of animals as such that we are not always authorized to carry your dog on our flights. Please check out the rules and requirements for animals in advance.

Deaf passengers of passengers with impaired hearing:

If you require special assistance, you must request this upon reservation.
Please inform us when you make your reservation that an assistance dog will travel with you on your flight.

Passengers with respiratory problems:

We can supply extra oxygen on board (up to 8 litres of oxygen per minute). So please contact the Medical assistance Co-ordination Service on + 32 2 7233703 by 48 hours before your departure at the latest. Please note that the extra costs are to be paid in advance. A surcharge will apply per bottle. Please complete the MEDIF form if you need extra oxygen on board.
Sleep apnea: The passenger can use equipment on board against sleep apnea. On all flights the equipment must be battery powered. Only on our A330 long haul to Africa we can offer electricity in our Business -class. The equipment cannot be used during take off and landing.
Please note: This power source cannot be guaranteed. Therefore your own medical equipment is essential... the passenger needs to bring batteries.

Passengers with a mental disability:

You can travel unaccompanied if you received clearance from the Medical Assistance Coordination Service.
Passengers who do not meet the requirements must be accompanied.
Your personal attendant must be a fully autonomous adult (at least 18 yrs old)

Pregnant women:

You are allowed to travel till 34 weeks pregnancy upon presentation of a recent medical certificate reporting the estimated date of delivery and confirming that there are no complications with the pregnancy.

Restriction rule

In addition to the above maximum numbers, the following restriction rule applies:

Maximum STCR:

BAe 146, RJ 85 and RJ 100: NO STCR allowed

737-300 / 737-400: NO STCR allowed

A319-100: 2 STCR allowed

A330-300: 2 STCR allowed

Derogations, special conditions and information

Please note that an air carrier or tour operator may refuse, on  the grounds of disability or reduced mobility, to accept a reservation from or to embark a disabled person or person with reduced mobility in two cases:

  • in order to meet applicable safety requirements established by international, Community or national law ir in order to meet safety requirements established by the authority that issued the air operator’s certificate to the air carrier concerned

  • if the size of the aircraft or its doors makes the embarkation or carriage of that disabled person with reduced mobility physically impossible

In the event of refusal, the air carrier, its agent or the tour operator will make all reasonable efforts to propose an acceptable alternative to the person in question. The denied person on the grounds of his or her diability or reduced mobility and any person accompanying this person will be offered the right to reimbursement or re-routing as provided for in Article 8 of Regulation (EC) N°261/2004.
