The cradle of Christianity
Israel is an important place in the Bible, where you will find much to remind you of biblical times in cities such as Nazareth, Golgotha and Jerusalem and the Sea of Galilee.
Jerusalem is Israel’s best known and biggest city and has a large number of sights. The Wailing Wall, Temple Mount and the Old City are tourist magnets. You can also visit the large number of Oriental markets or enjoy the impressive view of the city from the Mount of Olives. The Knesset, which is the Israeli parliament building, and the Holocaust Museum, are also worth seeing.
Other big cities include Tel Aviv and Haifa. The city of Haifa is situated on Mount Carmel, which affords you a magnificent view of the bay on which the city is situated. In good weather you could even see the neighbouring country of Lebanon. The Sea of Galilee, to the north-east of the city, is the favourite destination for day-trippers. Beach-lovers can indulge themselves on the shores of the Dead Sea, whose high salt content will keep you afloat, or the Red Sea, which is a beautiful blue sea offering many opportunities for snorkelling.
