This 300-year-old city is built on 42 islands and is also known as the “Venice of the North”. The city was founded by Tsar Peter the Great and was the capital of Russia until 1918. In 1914, its name was changed into the more Russian-sounding Petrograd. In 1924, the city was renamed Leningrad. The original name of St. Petersburg was not restored until 1991.
The Hermitage is St. Petersburg’s most important tourist attraction. This enormous museum consists of six buildings, the most important of which is the Winter Palace. It has a collection of over 3 million works of art, extending all the way from the Stone Age to the 20th century. Nor should you miss the new Vodka Museum, which is a museum entirely devoted to Russia’s national drink.
