Palermo is the capital of the region of Sicily. It has known the domination of the Romans, the Arabs, the Normans, the Spanish. Mixing the remains of the old civilisations such as churches covered by Arabic cupolas, colourful open air markets, narrow dusty streets and baroque palaces, Palermo has become a city of contrasts: a mixture of Christian faith, pagan superstitions and a curious heritage of the Muslim medieval period.
Its eternal springtime makes it very attractive. Situated in the middle of a magnificent bay, the Conca d'Oro, facing the blue Mediterranean Sea, amid luxurious tropical vegetation and surrounded by a crown of limestone mounts, Palermo shows marvellous scenery.
The place of Quattro Canti, the municipal palace and, nearby, the church of la Martorana, is an unsual example of medieval arabic art with its typical cupola.
The Massimo theatre has been restaured recently and has recovered the purity of its original Liberty style. One of the main theatres of Sicily, it has a very good program of special events, mostly operas.
