Home to the oldest, still active, School of Medicine in Europe, Montpellier is one of Europe’s most popular university cities. With a youthful resident population, Montpellier manages to easily marry its historical landmarks with state-of-the-art innovation.
Montpellier’s historical centre lies in the Ecusson district and has been preserved quite well - as you walk along the narrow winding streets, you’ll feel as if you’ve taken a step back in time.
If you prefer a more contemporary feel, head to the Antigone district. This chic, modern district, designed by famed architect Ricardo Bofill, connects the Polygon shopping centre with Montpellier’s main square, the Place de la Comédie. Thanks to the city’s burgeoning student population, the Place de la Comédie is never empty. Lively during the day and vibrant at night, there’s never a dull moment on the square.
Once you have seen enough of the city, venture outside the city walls for a day at the beach or take a tour around one of the vineyards of the Languedoc-Roussillon region.
