Unaccompanied Minors

Children travelling alone with Brussels Airlines are in safe hands. We accompany them throughout their journey, from the moment you say goodbye to them at the departure airport to the moment they are collected by family or friends at the final destination.

Applicability on flights operated by Brussels Airlines

This arrangement applies to children between 5 to 12 years (up to the 12th birthday), not accompanied by a passenger of at least 12 years of age, who is fully capable of taking care of the child during the entire trip.

Passengers between 12 and 18 years and travelling alone may be considered unaccompanied minors and accepted as such:

  • on special request of the parents or an appointed guardian
  • in case of doubt about his/her ability to travel alone.

How to proceed?

Booking

The booking of the unaccompanied minor service is processed through our Service Centre. We will be happy to explain the procedure to you. A fee* of €40 (Europe) or €80 (Intercontinental) is charged per flight.

*The fee may vary according to the city of departure (i.e. Switzerland).

Documents

Make sure that all required travel documents have been arranged: your child needs to be in possession of an ID card with a picture or a travel passport with visa and health certifications if required. You can already complete the Handling Advice Form at home and bring 3 copies to the airport or fill in the form at the airport.

At the airport

Please report at check-in 1 hour in advance of the latest check-in time mentioned on the ticket. After check-in, please proceed to Axxicom Special Assistance counter (Brussels airport) which is situated in the departure hall. At other airports, our check-in staff will direct you to a dedicated assistance counter. You will have the possibility to accompany your child to the gate. If you do not wish to do so, he/she will be escorted by a member of the assistance team through the passport control and security to the gate. Whatever option you choose, you are kindly requested to stay at the airport until the flight is airborne. Connections via Brussels are only allowed if the parent or legal guardian has made arrangements for the minor to be met on arrival and on departure by an authorised adult.

On board

A member of the cabin crew will welcome your child on board and look after him/her during the flight. On European flights, we will offer your child a drink and a snack from our “buy-on-board” selection. On intercontinental flights, a child meal will be served to children up to 9 years. For children between 9 to 12 years, you can request a child meal when you contact our Service Centre for the booking. For children older than 12 years, a standard meal will be offered.

Upon arrival

Our ground staff will escort your child through the airport arrival process. We will only release your child to the care of the parent or legal guardian, or to the connecting airline, once we have checked their identification. The authorised person who collects the child is kindly requested to be on time at the airport. If not, additional costs will be charged (meals, return transportation, accommodation,…).
