About Ajaccio

Ajaccio is an elegant and sophisticated Mediterranean city with real charm. Situated on the west coast of the French island of Corsica, in the Gulf of Ajaccio, the region has a favourable climate with mild winters and hot, dry summers.

Not only is Ajaccio the capital of ‘The Island of Beauty’, it is also the birthplace of Corsica’s most famous son: the French emperor Napoléon Bonaparte. As a result, you can find plenty of monuments dedicated to Napoléon’s life and childhood throughout the city. Most notable are the house where he was born Casa Buonaparte, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta where he was baptised and the Fesch museum which hosts one of the most important Napoleonic collections.

While the city centre is ideal for a relaxing stroll through beautiful narrow streets, a trip beyond the city’s borders is definitely worth it. Take a trip down south for a wonderful view of the Gulf of Ajaccio where the mild climate guarantees a pleasant beach experience well into autumn. Or follow the Route des Sanguinaires from Ajaccio to the Genovese Tower La Parata for a picturesque view of the Sanguinaires Islands. This magnificent archipelago turns crimson red at sunset, a truly stunning spectacle.
