Special information on the carriage of individuals with a disability on flights to or from the United States

Who is an 'individual with a disability'?

An individual with a disability is any individual who has a physical or mental impairment that, on a permanent or temporary basis, substantively limits one or more major life activities, has a record of such an impairment, or is regarded as having such an impairment. 14 C.F.R. § 382.3.

When and how to request special assistance?

Medical assistance or special accommodations are available for individuals with a disability on all flights operated by Brussels Airlines  To ensure that we can make the best possible preparations for you, we encourage you to let us know what assistance you will require, preferably at the time you book your flight.  However, in certain instances Brussels Airlines requires advance notice in order to offer the passenger proper care and assistance.  Instances where Brussels Airlines requires advance notice are:

  • 72 hours advance notice for use of medical oxygen supplied by Brussels Airlines for international flights.
  • 48 hours advanced notice for use of a respirator, ventilator, POC or CPAP.
  • 48 hours advance notice for carriage of an incubator.
  • 48 hours advance notice for passengers traveling on a stretcher.
  • 48 hours advance notice for the transportation of a passenger with both severe vision and hearing impairments.


If you choose to request special assistance, please provide the following:

  • Name of passengers and travel companion, if applicable
  • Degree of disability
  • Nature of disability

When you need only assistance in the airport, complete the general form* and send it to meda@brusselsairlines.com

Attention: passengers with certain medical conditions and passengers requiring special care during the flight may be required to provide a medical certificate.

Depending on the degree of impairment, Brussels Airlines may require a medical certificate if:

  • The passenger is traveling on a stretcher or in an incubator.
  • The passenger requires medical oxygen during the flight (POCs).
  • The passenger has a medical condition that creates reasonable doubt that they can safely complete the flight without requiring extraordinary medical assistance.
  • The passenger has a communicable disease that poses a direct threat to the health and safety of other passengers.


SOME CATEGORIES OF PASSENGERS NEEDING SPECIAL ASSISTANCE

Expectant mothers:

Expectant mothers with complication-free pregnancies can fly with Brussels Airlines up to four weeks before their expected due date (or up to and including the 36th week of pregnancy) upon presentation of a recent medical certificate reporting the estimated date of delivery.

Passengers needing wheelchair assistance:

A special in-flight wheelchair is available on board our aircraft for passengers with reduced mobility. For safety reasons, crewmembers are not authorized to lift passengers between the cabin seat and the wheelchair or to assist passengers during a visit to the lavatory.

Passengers' own wheelchairs are carried free of charge and in addition to their free baggage allowance. Please inform us of your wheelchair's dimensions, weight, and type before your flight so that we may fully assist you.  Our airline staff will assist you with boarding and store your wheelchair, which will be returned to you upon deplaning. 

Important - please note:
If your wheelchair is battery-driven, we request that you check in at least one (1) hour in advance. 

Before check-in, your wheelchair's batteries must be securely attached and any battery terminals must be insulated.  Brussels Airlines will not transport a damaged or leaking battery.

For safety reasons separate rules apply to wheelchairs or other battery-operated mobility aids that use wet cell batteries. Please contact us well in advance for information about the applicable regulations.

Passengers with respiratory problems:

Brussels Airlines can supply medical oxygen on board (up to 5 litres of oxygen per minute). If you require this service, please contact the Medical assistance Co-ordination Service at + 32 2 7233703 at least 72 hours before your departure. Please note that extra costs for this service are to be paid in advance and that a surcharge will apply per bottle. You will need to provide medical details on a MEDIF form if you need extra oxygen on board.

Travel with a safety assistant:

For flights to and from the U.S., a safety assistant must accompany (1) a passenger traveling in a stretcher or incubator; (2) a passenger who, due to mental disability, is unable to comprehend or respond appropriately to safety instructions from carrier personnel; and (3) a passenger with a mobility impairment so severe that he or she cannot physically assist in their own evacuation from the aircraft.  The safety assistant must be at least 18 years old, must not have reduced mobility and must not accompany any other passengers requiring assistance.
