Riga, the capital of Latvia, is situated on the Baltic Sea coast. It’s the largest city in the Baltic States. The Historic Centre of Riga has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Riga is the place to be if you like Art Nouveau architecture. The city is known for it and it is considered to be unparalleled anywhere in the world.
Since Latvia was a part of the USSR from 1940 to 1991, the Russian language is still present in this capital city. However, German and English are widely understood at places regularly visited by tourists.
Riga has several disctricts. The most popular among travellers is Vecriga, ‘old town’ in Latvian. The Doma Cathedral with the world famous pipe organ, along with vivid nightlife makes Vecriga the most interesting spot to visit.
