Why Lyon should be your next city trip
Lyon is not the most obvious choice for a quick getaway. And that’s exactly why you’ll like it. Moving easily from quieter neighborhoods to busy squares, you always find something to stop along the way. After only spending a few days here, you’ll see that the city quickly grows on you.
A slow start by the Saône
There’s no better way to start your day in Lyon than a stroll by the water. Head to the Saône river and take your time to gaze at the beautiful scenery around it.
A walk along the river rewards you with views of the city and the basilica on the hill, catching the morning light. Watch how cafés start to open one by one and how the whole area slowly comes to life.
You’ll see people running, grabbing coffee or just sitting by the water. On Saturdays, there’s a bit more movement with a market nearby, but it never feels too busy.
Where the rivers meet: Musée des Confluences
At the point where the two rivers Rhône and Saône meet, the Musée des Confluences stands out right away. Its glass, steel and bold angles almost make it look like a spaceship.
Walk around the museum and you’ll notice how it looks different from every side, especially when the light changes towards the end of the day. Even without going inside, it’s worth the stop.
Croix-Rousse, a different side of Lyon
Everyone has heard of Lyon, but are you also familiar with Croix-Rousse? Some call it the “Montmartre” of Lyon. Perched up on a hill, the Croix-Rousse district overlooks the city, providing a spectacular panoramic view over Lyon's rooftops. This neighborhood feels a bit removed from the rest of the city with its calmer and more local atmosphere.
Walk around to discover old silk shops with high windows, traditional markets and hidden passageways between buildings.
If you’re there on a Saturday, don’t miss the market along the main boulevard. You’ll find fresh produce, cheeses, flowers and much more. Perfect for a small picnic.
Looking for something to do in the evening? Check out Croix-Paquet and Montée de la Grande-Côte where you can find many funky bars and music venues. La Presqu'île also has some very cool cocktail bars. Along the bank of the Rhône in Part-Dieu you find floating bars hosting DJs. A night of fun guaranteed!
Getting lost in Vieux Lyon
This area is one of those places where you just keep on walking. In Vieux Lyon, you’ll find narrow cobblestone streets and Renaissance buildings. Hidden passageways, known as traboules, connect everything.
The chances of finding small squares when turning a corner is very high. It’s easy to lose track of time here.
You’ll also find plenty of traditional bouchons in this part of the city. These are cozy, simple French restaurants that serve mainly meat dishes. Sit down at one, take your time and relax while enjoying a good local meal.
From city views to sunset
For a different view of the city, head up to Fourvière. The best way to get there is to take the funicular from Vieux Lyon and you’re at the top in a few minutes.
From there, you see Lyon laid out in front of you. Rooftops, the rivers, everything in one view. The basilica immediately catches your eye with all its gorgeous details and beautiful colours.
If the weather is nice, Place de Fourvière is the perfect place to read, watch people pass by or to just take in the view.
Towards the end of the day, walk over to Jardin des Curiosités. It’s quieter and a bit more hidden. Our tip: bring something to drink to start your apéro moment while sitting on the grass and to watch the city slowly change into an evening scenery.
From lunch spots to dinner plans
Now that you’re in Lyon, there are a few food & drinks spots you’ll want to try.
Place Sathonay is one of those squares where people gather for lunch. A glass of wine, something simple to eat and no one in a rush. It fills up quickly, so make sure to get here in time.
In Vieux Lyon, a visit to a bouchon should definitely be on your list. Expect busy tables, classic dishes and a bit of noise.
For dinner, try something like Arsène or Brutal Lyon. They serve seasonal dishes and food combinations you don’t always expect. Still easy to try out, but just a bit different from the more traditional dining spots.
