Under the banner, we seek ways to minimise our carbon footprint and encourage our staff, customers and suppliers to do the same.

01 Smaller Aircraft 2

Brussels Airlines operates 3 of its European destinations with smaller regional aircraft (50- and 70-seaters). Compared to larger aircraft, this operation will save up to 22 thousand tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

01 Size Aircraft

Brussels Airlines tries to optimise the size of the aircraft used corresponding to the demand.

01 Air CO 2

Where possible, we provide aircraft parked at the gate with air conditioning and electric power via alternative, energy-saving methods rather than using the aircraft's own auxiliary power units (APU).

01 Potable Water

To reduce the weight of our aircraft we are limiting the amount of potable water on board.

01 Food trolleys

Brussels Airlines has recently replaced its existing food trolleys by lighter ones.

01 Lighter Seats

We reduce the weight of our aircraft by gradually installing lighter seats on our A319/A320 fleet. By doing so, we reduce the weight of every aircraft by 700kg, resulting in an annual reduction of 238 tonnes CO2 emission per aircraft.

01 CO2Logic

We offer customers the possibility to offset CO2 emissions of their flight in cooperation with our partner CO2logic.

02 Bullet Point In the cockpit
02 Pilot

Our pilots are trained in the most fuel-efficient procedures:

  • They reduce the take-off power to the maximum extent, allowing a longer engine lifetime and a reduction of the CO2 emissions.
  • Together with air traffic control Brussels Airlines reduces flown distances by flying more direct routes, which results in fewer emissions.
  • We adopt a minimum fuel policy in order to reduce the aircraft weight and thus the emissions, with an absolute priority to safety. The fuel consumption and respect of minimum fuel policy is closely monitored.
  • Our pilots routinely lower airspeed on cruising altitude and optimise the climb and descent speed, aiming at reducing fuel consumption and associated emissions on those sectors where speed is not a factor.

03 Winglets

Most of our aircraft are equipped with winglets, which are wingtip extensions that lower air resistance and result in up to 3% reduction in CO2 emission.

03 Flaps

The flaps of most aircraft have been modified to obtain a 2,7% reduction in CO2 emission. This results in a reduction of 1.650 tonnes of CO2 emission per year.

04 DAC

Almost all our A319 aircraft are equipped with DAC engines. These engines use the Double Annular Combustor technology, which significantly reduces NOx (nitrogen oxides) and CO2 emissions.

04 Wash Engine 2

Brussels Airlines is monitoring the performance of its aircraft engines to establish trends in fuel consumption so that we can more accurately gauge fuel needs for each flight.

04 Wash Engine

We routinely wash the engines of our aircraft to reduce fuel consumption and thus emissions by 0,75%.

Brussels Airlines is using very precise dispatch planning tools that take a whole range of parameters into account (optimum route, wind, temperature, optimum level, optimum cost index,...). This allows us to calculate the minimum fuel requirements in a most precise way, so that the amount of fuel can be optimised to a maximum.

Brussels Airlines in cooperation with Belgocontrol and Brussels Airport is testing an ideal descent approach in Brussels (CDA), to further reduce emissions and fuel consumption (the so-called SESAR project).

  • We have energy-efficient lighting systems in our headquarters
  • Brussels Airlines together with Brussels Airport is currently evaluating the installation of solar panels on its premises
  • In cooperation with Electrabel, our energy partner, we are running sensibilisation campaigns amongst our workforce to save energy where and when possible (for example reminders to switch off lights, PCs, screens, ... after working hours).

Brussels Airlines has substantially reduced paper over the last years in order to limit waste:

  • Brussels Airlines is aligned with all other IATA carriers in its e-ticket development programme, replacing all paper tickets by electronic ones.
  • Brussels Airlines is offering an e-learning programme to the travel agencies which reduces the number of on-site visits as well as the amount of hard copy brochures and leaflets.
  • New generation printers are installed in all offices worldwide: less printers that log and report all print commands and that are programmed to print two-sided by default on recycled paper.
  • The company organises regular "paperless days" for its staff, resulting in a reduction of 15.000 sheets per day.
  • The company has replaced its printed staff magazine by electronic newsletters, which results in a saving of 240.000 sheets of paper per year.
  • Brussels Airlines' flight crew receives its manuals no longer in hard copy but on USB device, which equals a paper saving of 3 million sheets per year.
  • Paper payslips are being replaced by electronic forms.
  • Brussels Airlines is offering alternative check-in possibilities to its customers, including mobile check-in. Currently about 20.000 passengers per month check in using their mobile device, which represents a saving of 40.000 sheets of paper per month or 480.000 per year.

We are working together with the Belgian Railways (NMBS/SNCB) to develop complementarity options between trains and aircraft in order to promote the use of public transport amongst our passengers.

The company reimburses train ticket costs for its staff, enhancing the use of public transport.

Brussels Airlines makes use of public transport for the transfer of its crews and staff to and from the car park.

In the Brussels Airlines technical areas, where the maintenance of our aircraft is being performed, we apply all regulatory environmental procedures in terms of waste collection, dangerous goods handling, pollution prevention, etc.

11 Recycling Programme

We have an internal recycling programme that involves:

  • Waste separation
  • The recycling of used company mobile phones, of which all proceeds go to the Child Cancer Fund
  • The recycling of used desktops and toners
  • The recycling of paper
  • The recycling of shredded paper. For this, Brussels Airlines received a "Certificate of Environmental Accomplishment".

The company's car policy proposes a selection of only "green cars", with low fuel consumption rates to its staff, whereby a CO2 tax is included in the car budget.

13 Virtual Servers

Through the use of virtual servers, we have reduced the number of devices with 90%, which brings the energy cost substantially down. We have also optimised the printer park, which resulted in a reduction of 50% of the devices.

Brussels Airlines has received the 2009 "Environmental Award" from Brussels Airport. The airport rewards those partners who in 2009 played an outstanding role in reducing air traffic nuisance. Brussels Airlines received it for its leading role in developing and putting into place Collaborative Decision Making at Brussels Airport.
