    About Monrovia

Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, features a number of popular beaches and sights.

Welcome to a city of historical importance, with the famous Providence Island and its deep-rooted african culture. Symbol of the Freedom, Providence Island is famous for welcoming liberated African slaves returned to their homeland. It is a site of great historical importance for the people of Liberia. Traditional dances and concerts are also frequently held there.

Other attractions include the Waterside Market and the National Museum. You can buy beautiful African batik goods and woodcarvings at the Waterside Market, which is held in an old area near the centre. The National Museum is known mainly for its collection of old Liberian art.

    Our suggestions:

SLEEP Mamba Point Hotel (United Nations Drive, www.mambapointhotel.biz) is located next to the US Embassy, and offers luxury and comfort in one of the safest areas in town. It overlooks the beach, and also has a casino and swimming pool. If you’re hungry after a day’s exploring, the restaurant serves excellent cuisine, from Italian to sushi. Libassa Ecolodge Beach and Lagoon Resort (Marshall Road, Ben Town) is another lovely place to stay, roughly 30km from the city centre.
EAT Drink a beer, eat on the beach, kick back and enjoy the view at Golden Beach (2nd Street, Sinkor Region, www.facebook.com/goldenbeachliberia?ref=hl). This affordable hangout serves Liberian, European and Asian food, and is open every day until late. Otherwise, Anglers Bar & Grill (off Camp Johnson Road) has a great American-style buffet with beach views.
    ACTIVITIES

    • Around a 30-minute drive from Monrovia, Careysburg is Liberia’s oldest settlement, founded in 1856. Surrounded by a verdant, cool landscape, this relaxed city offers some great examples of homes and churches built in the style of the American South.
    • You’ll find beautiful handmade clothes and accessories with a modern twist at Afropolitan Boutique (Benson Street, at the corner with Newport Street, www.afropolitanstore.com). Everything here is made by Liberian artisans and designers, using vibrantly coloured traditional African fabrics.
    • Off the shore from Monrovia, across the Gabriel Tucker Bridge, Providence Island is where the freed slaves founded the Republic of Liberia. This important historical and cultural site plays host to many of Liberia’s major cultural events.
PRACTICAL INFO Roberts International Airport is 58km east of Monrovia. A 75-minute taxi journey should cost around LRD3,500/€34. Or ask your hotel about their shuttle service.
