    About Porto

The world famous Port wine, the typical alleyways and the picturesque “zona ribeirinha” on the River Douro are all good reasons to visit Porto, and the city has even more to offer …

Porto is the second biggest city in Portugal and has been placed on UNESCO’s list of world heritage sites. It is situated on steep granite hills and provides a view of the River Douro. The city centre is a jumble of narrow nineteenth century lanes and alleyways. Porto’s main tourist attraction is the Vila Nova de Goia district, which is the historic birthplace of Port wine.

Porto has a large number of sights with religious connotations that are certainly worth a visit. They include Sé, a 13th-century cathedral, and Igreja de São Fransisco, a gothic church with rococo influences. Torre dos Clérigos, a 75-metre-high tower from the 18th century, is also worth a visit. From the top of this tower, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the city of Porto.

Just across the river from Porto you’ll find Vila Nova de Gaia, a beautiful and unspoiled coastline with large sandy beaches and dunes. The wooden walkway that runs along the coastline is perfect for idyllic walks along the seaside.
