Palermo is the capital of the region of Sicily. It has known the domination of the Romans, the Arabs, the Normans, the Spanish. Mixing the remains of the old civilisations such as churches covered by Arabic cupolas, colourful open air markets, narrow streets and baroque palaces, in Palermo you will enjoy a unique mixture of architectural styles.
Its eternal springtime makes it very attractive. Situated in the middle of a magnificent bay, the Conca d'Oro, facing the blue Mediterranean Sea, amid luxurious tropical vegetation and surrounded by a crown of limestone mounts, Palermo shows marvellous scenery.
The place of Quattro Canti, the municipal palace and, nearby, the church of la Martorana, is an unsual example of medieval arabic art with its typical cupola.
The Massimo theatre has been restaured and has recovered the purity of its original Liberty style. One of the main theatres of Sicily, it has a very good program of special events, mostly operas.
If you are looking for a beach getaway, then Palermo is a perfect destination. Just outside Palermo, you will find Mondello Beach which is very popular with locals. If you would like somewhere else, you’ll find a whole stretch of sandy beaches on the 150-kilometre coastline in the province of Palermo. These beaches are all surrounded by beautiful landscapes and you can practice a wide range of activities here. To name just a number of them: Aspra, Cefalù, San Vito Lo Capo, Isola delle Femmine, Arenella, Ficarazzi, Lascari, Sferracavallo, Trappeto…
