In Entebbe, you can enjoy culture and relaxation, museums and beaches and a pleasant, restful atmosphere.
Entebbe is situated near Kampala, the capital of Uganda, on the banks of Lake Victoria, which is the second largest of Africa’s great lakes. Most of its 90,500 inhabitants work for one of the ministries established in the city. The remainder earn a living through agriculture or fishing.
The city of Entebbe takes good care of its sights and magnificent countryside. One major attraction is the Wildlife Centre, where you can find out all about wild animals and tropical plants. You should also take a walk through the botanical gardens. And don’t forget to spend an afternoon relaxing on the beautiful beaches of Lake Victoria.
SLEEP A few minutes from Entebbe International Airport, 2 Friends Beach Hotel (3 Nambi Road, 2friendshotel) offers 16 tastefully and creatively decorated spots to sleep – many with views of Lake Victoria. A small pool and bar overlook the lake and mountain bikes are free for guests’ use. Also not far from the airport is Laico Lake Victoria (Plot 23-31, Circular Road, laicohotels) – not that you’d know it, thanks to the peaceful lake view, modern rooms and relaxing restaurants.
EAT Let Lake Victoria lap at your feet as you sip on a cold Tusker and eat delicious pizza in the shade of the palm grove at Goretti Pizza and Grill (Nambi Road Manyago, Anderita Beach). Otherwise, if you’re in Kampala, go local with tilapia stew and banana leaves at 2K (Plot 176, Nakulabye Road, Bakuli).
- For an eclectic mix of arts and crafts hand-picked by the owner from around Africa, the Gately Craft Shop (Plot 2, Portal Road, www.gatelyinn.com/craft-shop) is the perfect place to pick up some gifts for family and friends back home.
- Flora and birdlife abound at the Entebbe Botanical Garden (Berkely Road, www.bgci.org) set on the edge of Lake Victoria at Entebbe Bay. A mix of indigenous forest and horticulture attracts droves of birds including the grey kestrel, fish eagles and palm-nut vultures. Keep an eye out for the vervet monkeys (clear your pockets before you go or they will follow you for food).
- For a night out with Ugandans and expats, the Four Turkeys (Portal Road) offers a pool table and traditional pub grub. The warm welcome will make you feel right at home.
The journey into town is about 8km from Entebbe International Airport and the fare will be around UGX30,000/€8. Most of the taxis do not have meters, so be sure to confirm the price before you leave.
