The first African country to gain independence, today Ghana hosts remains of colonial forts and castles. It is also home to Lake Volta, the world's largest artificial lake. Its cultural calendar is filled with colourful festivals, and the handwoven Ashanti kente is the most famous of all Ghanaian textiles. The official language of the country is English.
