Mumbai, your gateway to India
Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is the financial and entertainment capital of India. It’s a dazzling city with centuries of history, a rich cultural scene, many artsy museums and theatres as well as buildings in the Gothic Revival style. With an estimated population of 20 million, Mumbai is the most populous city in India, and the ninth most populous urban agglomeration in the world.
Mumbai is home to the Gateway of India, the most recognised monument in the city. It has been nicknamed “The Taj Mahal of Mumbai” because of its magnificent architecture that combines Islamic and Hindu styles. Also in Mumbai is the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus - a historic railway station and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s worth visiting just for its sheer beauty alone – the bustling environment (it is one of the busiest railway stations in India) is an added plus.
When in Mumbai, you will be immersed in a dynamic culture. From colourful festivals to fragrant food, from traditional music to energetic people, Mumbai is a city that is pulsing with life and offers a myriad of experiences. This Indian multi-city is also where the second oldest film industry in the world, Bollywood, was born. If you spot your favourite Bollywood actor on the streets, don’t be shy to ask for an autograph or to snap a selfie.
Apart from the lively city centre, you can also enjoy beautiful nature around Mumbai. The Sanjay Gandhi National Park and the surrounding beaches, such as Manori and Marve, are perfect getaways for some relaxation. Furthermore, EsselWorld, a theme park located in Gorai, will guarantee some water-based fun for your children.
Mumbai stretches beyond the city itself. The best example is Matheran, a wonderful little hill-station that provides beautiful panoramic views. Early risers will most definitely appreciate the sunsets at Louisa Point. If you love paragliding, Kamshet offers an overview of pretty little villages with natural scenery and fresh air.
Murud-Janjira is a magnificent fort on an island near the coastal village of Murud. Murud-Janjira is one of the strongest marine forts in India and is famous for its three gigantic cannons: Kalalbangdi, Chavri and Landa Kasam.
In the mood for some partying? Hop on a flight and head to Goa. Just an hour away by plane, this former Portuguese colony offers gorgeous beaches where you can bask in sunshine, sip cocktails and enjoy music all year round.
Please note that all passengers travelling to India and connecting onto a domestic flight need to clear their baggage through customs at the first airport of entry in India and hand it over to the transfer desk. This requirement is mandatory, even if the baggage has been tagged with its final destination in India.
