    About Jerez de la Frontera

Jerez de la Frontera is the largest city in the Cádiz province, located in Andalusia in the southern region of Spain. With both Spanish and Moorish influences, the streets of Jerez exude an aristocratic air that is quite unique. Some must-see monuments are the 11th century Alcázar, a Moorish fortress that has been partially restored; the Cathedral del Salvador where you can find La Virgen Niña, a painting by Zurbarán; and the magnificent Charterhouse, a monastery in the late Gothic style. However, Jerez de la Frontera is especially known for three things: sherry, flamenco and horses.

Sherry is a fortified wine originating from Jerez de la Frontera. In fact, the word ‘sherry’ is derived from the Spanish word ‘Jerez’. The city’s wine culture dates back to 1100BC, but it wasn’t until the Moors introduced a distillation process in 711 AD, that Jerez de la Frontera became known as the sherry capital. The fortified wine became a favoured spirit in Britain and consequently, many sherry bodegas in Jerez de la Frontera were founded by British families in the 17th century. Several bodegas are open to the public such as the historically important bodega of González Byass or the Bodega de la Concha designed by French engineer Gustav Eiffel. If you’d rather sip on a glass of sherry in the Andalusian sunshine, head to the Plaza Planteras for some tapas and sherry.

Together with Sevilla and Cádiz, Jerez de la Frontera forms the birthplace of a unique art form that beautifully combines singing, dancing and guitar music: flamenco. Enjoy beguiling performances in one of the many peña flamencas or tablaos flamencos dotted around the city. If the art of flamenco has completely entranced you, be sure to visit the Centro Andaluz de Flamenco – located in the Pemartín mansion with its extraordinary Rococo-style courtyard – for an insight into its history and cultural significance.

Jerez de la Frontera is home to the internationally acclaimed equestrian school Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre, which is comparable to the Spanish Riding School of Vienna. The school is devoted to maintaining traditional Spanish horsemanship and prepares horses and riders for international dressage competitions. Equestrian enthusiasts will love the horse shows, where the Andalusian horses elegantly perform a unique equestrian ballet. Guided tours of the school itself are also available all year round.

    Around Jerez de la Frontera

The sunny climate of Andalusia is ideal for beach holidays and the Atlantic coast is only a short drive away. The harbour town El Puerto de Santa Maria, from where Christopher Columbus set off for his second journey to America, lies barely 15 minutes from Jerez de la Frontera. Here, you’ll find the golden sandy beaches of La Puntilla, Vistahermosa and Valdelagrana. But if you’re looking for something really special, it’s worth going further south to Bolonia beach (not to be confused with Bologna, Italy). This beach lies about an hour’s ride from Jerez and is a local secret. The entire coastal area of Bolonia is still largely unspoilt with no multi-storey beachfront hotels or apartment blocks. If you’re looking for a quiet and relaxed beach which is frequented by locals, then this is your spot.

If you’re looking for a good day trip, you can always visit a slice of Britain on the Iberian Peninsula! Gibraltar, located at the southern tip of the peninsula, is British Overseas Territory, so don’t forget to bring your ID or passport on your visit. The most important landmark is of course the rock of Gibraltar, though the town is well worth a visit too. The unusual mix of British and Spanish influences is quite fascinating.

Did your trip to Jerez de la Frontera inspire you to explore more of Andalusia? Our flights to/from Jerez de la Frontera, Sevilla and Malaga are optimised for a flexible ride-and-fly discovery of Andalusia. You can, for example, arrive in Jerez de la Frontera, then spend a few days in Sevilla before you fly back home from Malaga. Customise your holiday to your liking, the choice is yours!
