    About Marseille

    Fiesta des Suds (19 October – 22 October 2016)

The annual festival attracts thousands of party people to the Docks des Suds in Marseille to enjoy world music with high-profile performers from all over the world.

Culture, history and tasty fish soup: Marseille can offer any tourist a pleasant stay in France’s most important port.

Marseille is the second biggest city in France, and has a large number of sights. You can get a sample by visiting the Cathédrale de la Major, the Notre Dame de la Garde , the Basilique Saint-Victor, the Palails Longchamp and the Château d’If, a castle situated on an island that used to be a prison.

The old harbour, built by the Greeks, is now a marina and fishing port. It has a large number of fish restaurants where you can try the local fish soup, better known as bouillabaisse. There is also the Hôtel de Ville, the former town hall that was built in the 17th century. The entrance to the old port is still protected by two forts, which have survived from the past. The most interesting street in Marseilles is Canebière, a lively street with a large number of cafés and restaurants.

One of the most popular day trips to do near Marseille is an excursion to the splendid calanques of Cassis, which are spectacular rocky inlets and are also called the Mediterranean fjords. If you prefer to remain close to the city, you can walk along the Corniche, where you will find some popular beaches such as Le Prophète, Le Prado or Les Catalans.
