Unaccompanied Minors

Children travelling alone with Brussels Airlines are in safe hands. We accompany them throughout their journey, from the moment you say goodbye to them at the departure airport to the moment they are collected by family or friends at the final destination.

Applicability on flights operated by Brussels Airlines

This arrangement applies to children between 5 to 11 years, not accompanied by a passenger of at least 12 years of age, who is fully capable of taking care of the child during the entire trip.

Passengers between 12 and 18 years and travelling alone may be considered unaccompanied minors and accepted as such:

  • on special request of the parents or an appointed guardian
  • in case of doubt about his/her ability to travel alone.

Make sure that all required travel documents have been arranged: your child needs to be in possession of an ID card with a picture or a travel passport with visa and health certifications if required.

Please make sure to also add a recent picture of your child. This does not need to be an official passport size picture, a regular portrait picture is fine. It is important though, that your child can easily be identified on it. Therefore, we kindly ask you to add a portrait picture of your child alone.

You can already complete the Handling Advice Form at home and bring 3 copies to the airport or fill in the form at the airport.

Extra requirements for minors travelling alone out of France

Please be informed that as from 15 January 2017, French authorities have implemented extra conditions for minors travelling alone out of France. Read more >>

Children of Italian nationality

Every child of Italian nationality, who is under 14 years old and is travelling alone or accompanied by persons who are not their parents or legal guardians, must hold a fully completed declaration, the so-called Dichiarazione di affido (Law No. 1185/67), which can be obtained from the local police station (Questura) (not from the airport police). This declaration must be carried together with the child’s passport. If the documentation is incomplete, the child may be refused boarding.

Extra requirements for minors travelling alone out of Switzerland

In case the minor is not accompanied at the airport by one of the parents or legal guardians, the child needs to be in possession of a parental permission as well as a photocopy of a valid identity document of the parent or legal guardian who provided his or her signature on the parental permission document.

Children of Spanish nationality

All Spanish minors travelling out of Spain must have a parental consent, even when they carry an ID or passport. This consent can be obtained in one of the following offices: police station, Guardia Civil, courts, notaries and the mayor’s office.

Go to the check-in area one hour before the latest check-in time mentioned on your ticket. Our staff will direct you and your child to a dedicated assistance counter (Facilicom Airport Services at Brussels Airport, near check-in row 1).

Your child will receive a bracelet with his/her name, flight number and destination. This bracelet can’t be removed and should stay around the child's wrist during the entire trip.

A staff member will accompany your child through passport control and security and bring him/her to the departure gate.

Please stay at the airport until the flight is airborne.

On board

A flight attendant will look after your child during the entire flight. On European flights, a drink and a snack from our “buy-on-board” selection will be offered. On intercontinental flights, a child meal will be served to children up to 9 years. For children between 9 and 11 years, you can request a child meal during the booking of this special service. Children from 12 years and older will receive a standard meal.

Upon arrival we will guide your child through the airport, go through customs when applicable and pick up his/her baggage if needed. When all identification is correct, we will hand over your child to the care of the parent, legal guardian or to the connecting airline. Please be on time at the airport to pick up the child to avoid additional costs (e.g. meals, return transportation, accommodation, etc.)
