Flights to Varna and the Black Sea

Varna is an unbelievable city. It has everything you’ll need: magnificent hotels, sports complexes, beaches, cultural sites and corners of nature that’ll take your breath away! It’s quite simply Bulgaria’s largest city on the Black Sea coast and it is often considered as the country’s most beautiful seaside resort.

Every year, thousands of tourists go to Varna, and for good reason: it’s a huge architectural and theatrical centre with universities, ancient remains, and an international opera house that presents critically acclaimed performances!

So don’t wait a moment longer, and book your Brussels Airlines ticket to Varna!

      What to do in Varna?

      1. The Varna Archaeological Museum, which houses magnificent jewels, treasures, weapons, and objects of all kinds from Prehistory to Antiquity, is well worth a visit. The museum perfectly retraces the evolution of Bulgarian civilisation. Once you’ve been there you’ll feel truly informed!
      2. The Dormition of the Mother of God Cathedral is just as impressive as the museum. Dating from the 1880s, this cathedral is particularly noticeable thanks to its onion-shaped gold domes. If you can plan your visit to coincide with any celebrations that are going on, you’ll be able to enjoy the sublime singing of the cathedral choir.
      3. Independence Square is a magnificent pedestrian area where it’s nice to take a stroll. Not far from the square are Varna’s Theatre and Opera House. In the surrounding area is a small market where you can find plenty of souvenirs to take home.
      4. The Roman Baths of Odessos are perhaps the city’s most significant monument, and the largest Roman remains in Bulgaria! These thermal baths occupy an area of 7,000 m2 and the walls reach a height of 20 metres. At just 100 metres from the Black Sea, it’s the perfect setting for concerts or other events!
      5. A visit to the Varna Aquarium is a perfect occasion for a family outing or to fulfil a passion for all things aquatic. You’ll find examples of all the fish from the Black Sea in one place!
      6. The Aladzha Monastery is just 23 minutes’ drive from Varna. It’s no accident that it’s one of the most visited monasteries on the Black Sea coast. You’ll find catacombs, a basilica, and some magnificent frescoes.
      7. Sixteen kilometres from Varna is one of Bulgaria’s most famous seaside resorts, the Golden Sands, classed as being among the most beautiful in Europe. Don’t think twice about it: in the heart of a nature park, this seaside resort is world famous for its activities during the day and at night, as well as for its fine sandy beaches and magnificent landscapes. Near the Golden Sands is Aquapolis, the most beautiful aquatic park in Eastern Europe, offering panoramic views of the Black Sea.

      • Telephone calls and Wi-Fi: The dialling code for Bulgaria is +359. You will have no trouble finding Wi-Fi. Indeed, Wi-Fi networks are often available in the airport, and also in Varna’s hotels, restaurants, and cafés.

What to do and not do in Varna?

      • If you go to a restaurant, never leave a tip on the table when you leave! Give it to the waiter or waitress when you pay the bill.
      • At lunchtime, you’d better be very hungry because that meal often includes 5-6 different dishes!
      • When you go to a market, don’t hesitate to haggle. If you don’t manage to achieve at least a 15% discount, you’re not doing it properly! On that note, avoid buying jewellery in the markets, as all that glistens isn’t necessarily gold! On the other hand, you’ll find good quality leather, inexpensive clothes, and crockery.
      • In shops you can pay in dollars or euros, but the price will be higher than if you use local currency (the Bulgarian lev).
      • The locals greatly appreciate it if you know a few words in Bulgarian, but be careful of gestures: nodding the head is the equivalent of saying “no”, whilst shaking the head from left to right means “yes”. To avoid any misunderstanding, it is better to learn to say “yes” and “no” in Bulgarian! Remember, too, that the Bulgarians use the Cyrillic alphabet and that signs are often in Cyrillic. It’s also wise to learn a few words in Bulgarian.
