    About Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece and the capital of the Greek region of Macedonia. Co-reigning capital of the Byzantine Empire, alongside Constantinople, Thessaloniki became one of the most important trading hubs of southeast Europe and has retained that status up until today.

After the fall of the Byzantine Empire, Thessaloniki was ruled by the Ottoman Empire up until 1912, when Greece gained control over the city. The most important landmark which represents that victory is the White Tower, a former prison and scene of mass execution under Ottoman rule. Aside from this historical monument, Thessaloniki is home to fifteen Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments, all listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Today, Thessaloniki is considered to be Greece’s cultural capital and is known for its festivals and sport events. With a vibrant nightlife boasting the highest number of cafes and bars per capita in any European city, Thessaloniki is often listed among the world’s “ultimate party cities”.

Lose yourself in history and visit one of the many museums, such as the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki or the Museum of Byzantine Culture. Are you interested in something more relaxing? Head to Mediterranean Cosmos, the largest shopping mall in the Balkans, or take a stroll along the most famous and expensive streets of the city, Tsimiski Street and Proxenou Koromila Avenue.

    Around Thessaloniki

If you’re travelling with children and looking for a day of fun, you’ll most definitely want to go to Waterland just outside the city centre. Waterland is the largest water park in southeast Europe and you’re guaranteed to leave with the most amazing memories. Want something to wow your kids? Head to the futuristic Thessaloniki Science Centre and Technology Museum, where everyone will have the time of their lives in the digital planetarium and motion simulator theatre with 3D projection.

Thessaloniki is the starting point for any trip to Halkidiki, the famous three-fingered peninsula shaped as Poseidon’s trident. This earthly paradise is about an hour’s drive from Thessaloniki and is a real treat for both beach and mountain lovers. Kassandra and Sithonia offer long sandy beaches and a variety of resorts, while the third finger, Athos, has remained mostly untouched thanks to the presence of Mount Athos, which is better known as the Holy Mountain. The rules for visiting the mountain are very strict and access is forbidden to women and children. If you are unable to climb the mountain, rent a boat and enjoy spectacular views of it from the sea.
