    Flights to Ohrid, Macedonia

Ohrid is one of those cities you’ll never forget. It’s a real diamond that, happily, is still undiscovered by mass tourism. You’ll find countryside offering unique landscapes, walks along a magic lake, shingle beaches, never-ending cobbled streets, and above all, a heritage site under the protection of UNESCO! This Macedonian City where time stands still will transport you to another world!

So don’t wait a moment longer, and book your Brussels Airlines ticket to Ohrid!

    What to do in Ohrid?

    1. To soak up the city’s atmosphere, start with a stroll through Ohrid’s little cobbled streets. They’re quite simply wonderful. This is the chance to discover the city under your own steam, and gaze at the architecture of the different buildings.
    2. Then, climb up to Samuel’s fortress, which has 18 towers with up to 18 metres high walls. Here you can visit the small Byzantine church of Sveti Jovan that overlooks Lake Ohrid. This is a perfect photo opportunity. What’s more, if you continue in this direction, you’ll discover an old Byzantine monastery, St. Pantaleimon Monastery.
    3. The Ancient Theatre of Ohrid is also worth a detour. Built around 70 AD, the seats still bear the surnames of those for whom they were reserved.
    4. If you need a little relaxation, the beaches, such as Cuba Libre, or, if you like pebbles, Gravice, await you.
    5. Follow that with a boat to the small island of Sveti Naum and head towards the village of Trpeytsa. The island isn’t particularly special, but the crossing will draw your full attention. The spectacular landscape will take your breath away!
    6. Finally, support the local economy by buying souvenirs at the popular market, and don’t miss the famous Ohrid pearls.

Practical information for your trip to Ohrid

    • Brussels Airlines flights arrive and depart from Ohrid’s St. Paul the Apostle Airport, which is located a little less than:
      • 10 km from the centre of Ohrid
      • 10 km from Struga
      • 53 km from Kicevo
Buses also go to these towns throughout the day.
    • Time zone: UTC/GMT+2.
    • Currency: The local currency is the Macedonian dinar. You won’t have any trouble finding cash machines (Visa, MasterCard and AM). You can pay in euros or dollars in Macedonia, but it is more economical and simpler to use the national currency.
    • Telephone calls and Wi-Fi: The dialling code for Macedonia is +389. You will have no trouble finding Wi-Fi. Indeed, Wi-Fi networks are available in the airport, and are often in Ohrid’s hotels, restaurants, and cafés.
    • Electric sockets: These have a standard voltage of 230 V and are type F (European standard). If you use American or British plugs, you will need an adaptor.
    • Travel information: European Union citizens don’t need a visa for a trip to Ohrid. All they need is their passport or identity card. For all information on visas and travel documents, visit the website www.iatatravelcentre.com.
    • Vaccination: When travelling to Ohrid, there are no mandatory vaccinations for European travellers. For more health information, visit the website www.iatatravelcentre.com.

What to do and not do in Ohrid?

    • It is not necessary to leave a tip in restaurants because it’s included in the bill. However, it’s always welcome.
    • If you visit places of worship, conform to the rules in use: take off your shoes when entering a mosque, and cover your shoulders and legs in a church or Orthodox monastery.
    • As far as the language, Macedonian, is concerned, you might encounter difficulties if you don’t master the Cyrillic alphabet. As English is not widely used, install one of the translation Apps widely available on the market (some don’t even need an internet connection).

    When to go to Ohrid?

Ohrid has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers. In winter, on the other hand, it can be quite cold. The best time to visit is between April and October. If you are going in summer, don’t forget your sunglasses and sun cream, as temperatures can reach as high as 40°C!

    What to eat in Ohrid?

Obviously, you must try Macedonian gastronomy! With Greek, Turkish, but also Italian influences, Macedonian cuisine combines the best Mediterranean and oriental gastronomy. "Tavce-gravce", beans in tomato sauce served in an earthenware or cast-iron pan, is the national dish, but let yourself be tempted by the cheeses, desserts, and local wines. Follow the aroma of barbecues, as Macedonian meat is incredible. The local fruit and vegetables are grown (almost) without any pesticides.

    Cultural events in Ohrid

    • Ohrid Summer Festival (July - August): Each year, the city presents music, theatre, dance, and poetry. Needless to say, there’s something for everyone.
    • Balkan Folklore Festival (July): Discover the Balkans through its typical music, dance, instruments, and costumes. This is an opportunity to immerse yourself in a magical atmosphere over several days.
    • Ohrid International Swimming Marathon: This takes place in August each year, and welcomes the world’s best swimmers for a 30 km race.
    • The International Seminar for Macedonian Language, Literature, and Culture (August) is the best way to learn more about Macedonian culture.
