About Gran Canaria - Las Palmas

Gran Canaria is your passport to paradise
Discover Gran Canaria, the miniature continent >>

Gran Canaria, the third largest of the Canary Islands, is often described as a “miniature continent” due to its unique microclimates and surprising variety of landscapes. From leafy green forestland to desert-like sandy beaches, from rugged mountain views to the cosmopolitan and dynamic city centre, Gran Canaria truly has something for everyone.

Beach lovers are spoiled for choice in Gran Canaria – the island boasts about 60 kilometres of beaches. Maspalomas , located in the south, is one of the most visited coastlines of Europe. Its most well-known features are the golden dunes, El Faro - the famous old lighthouse, and the protected nature reserve which serves as a rest stop for birds migrating from Europe to Africa. Next to Maspalomas, you’ll find the Playa del Inglés. This golden coast is ideal for families as it is a very wide beach with protected areas for children. It is also the place to be for beach sport enthusiasts as it is the ideal meeting place for surfers, runners and capoeira dancers.

In addition to beach sports, active holiday enthusiasts can enjoy a wide variety of sports on Gran Canaria. Hikers, climbers and mountain bikers will enjoy the mountainous heart of the island. The volcanic relief of Gran Canaria is perfect for rock climbers and you’ll find many climbing sites all over the island, such as the Roque Nublo.

If you’re more of an urban explorer, you’ll love the island’s capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, located in the north-east. Discover the many historical buildings of Las Palmas, take a stroll down the Avenida Marítima to the sports marina or experience the nightlife in Las Canteras. No wonder this is the most populated island of the entire archipelago - who could resist such an exciting location?

      Our suggestions:

SLEEP Arriving at Hotel Cordial Mogán Playa (Avenida de los Marrero 2, cordialcanarias) you might worry you’ve accidentally booked into Disneyland, so gleaming are the pastel towers. Waltz inside though and things immediately improve. The staff wear traditional Canarian attire, the rooms are elegant without being overwhelming and the village feel conveys a welcome sense of peace and quiet.
EAT Situated in a 500-year-old house, La Catina’s (Calle Doreste y Molina 38) chunky wood and stone aesthetic is immediately settling. The food is simple but tasty, featuring steaks and fish, tapas and a few Italian dishes, with the daily specials a particular standout.

      • Casa de Colon (Calle Colon 1, www.casadecolon.com) is the house in which Christopher Columbus stayed when on the island, and now tells the story of his explorations through interactive maps, journals and exhibitions explaining the dangers of each voyage. With signs in English and Spanish, it’s a good way of getting out of the sun, and keeping kids occupied for a few hours once you’ve tired of the beach.
      • If you’re aching for a piece of traditional Gran Canaria, head out to the old town of La Vegueta. There aren’t many shops, very few bars and almost nothing to do but stroll through the quiet cobbled streets and take pictures of the beautiful pastel houses. Perfect for a quiet afternoon.
      • Gran Canaria gets some decent waves, so it’s a great place to learn to surf. There are plenty of companies offering lessons, but the guys at Surf Canaries Surf School (Avenida Alf Provisionales 2E, www.surf-canaries.com) are friendly, and have good equipment and an excellent reputation.
PRACTICAL INFO A taxi from the airport to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will cost around €26. Bus 60 runs from the airport to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. A ticket costs €2.30.
