What if I exceed the limits for checked baggage?

If you wish to carry more checked baggage than your free allowance, you can purchase extra baggage in advance.

In case you didn’t buy extra baggage and you exceed your free baggage allowance, you will be charged for extra baggage at the airport.

How can I buy extra baggage?

Extra baggage can be purchased up to 2 hours before departure and needs to be added before check-in. You’ll get the cheapest price on brusselsairlines.com or via our Service Centre. At the airport, higher fees are applied.

Extra baggage that exceeds weight, size or both can also be purchased online on brusselsairlines.com, via our Service Center or at the airport.

If you want to take more than 5 additional pieces of baggage (in addition to your free baggage allowance) with you, we kindly ask you to register these pieces of baggage via our Service Centre before departure.

Good to know

Infants (aged 0 – 23 months)  are entitled to one free piece of checked baggage of max. 23kg, except when travelling in Economy Basic on short- and medium haul flights and Economy Light. If a checked bag is needed for the infant travelling in this travel class, the accompanying adult can add an extra piece of baggage to his/her own booking for their infant via My Booking.

Children (aged 2 – 11)  are entitled to the same free baggage allowance as adults, depending on the travel class.

You may also check in, free of charge, one of the following items:

  • 1 infant's carrying basket
  • 1 car seat
  • 1 fully collapsible stroller/pushchair, which may be used up to the aircraft door but put in the hold during the flight (applicable also for Economy Basic on short- and medium haul flights & Economy Light)

You can hand over your baggage to our staff at a check-in counter. They will prepare the baggage tag and send it to the airport’s baggage handlers.

On some intercontinental routes Brussels Airlines Economy gives you the added benefit of discounted fees on a second item of baggage (23 kg, dimensions 158 cm). You can take advantage of this offer at check-in or directly online at a particularly favourable price at the time of booking. You can also add baggage later through your profile.

The discounted fees only apply to the 2nd item of baggage. Miles & More members with Frequent Traveller status and above, as well as STAR Gold members, enjoy an increased baggage allowance on all flights. In this case the discounted fee no longer applies and the normal SWISS excess baggage rules apply to any additional baggage.
