Vilnius: a city that quietly steals your heart

Vilnius is one of those cities that quietly wins you over. As you wander through its streets, you begin to notice how naturally everything fits together. Baroque churches rise above red rooftops, while cafés fill small squares and green hills frame the city in the background. It feels lived in, not staged.

The Old Town forms the heart of it all, compact and easy to explore. In just a few days, you move from culture to cosy restaurants to wide views over the skyline without ever feeling rushed. Vilnius may not shout for attention, but it stays with you long after you leave.

Wandering through the Old Town

In the Old Town, you begin to feel the pace of Vilnius. Cobblestone streets wind past colourful façades and church towers that rise above the rooftops. Turn a corner and a small square opens up, sometimes with a terrace where you feel like sitting down for a while.

Its charm lies in that simplicity. You walk without a strict plan, letting one street lead to the next. There’s no rush to tick off sights. Instead, you take your time, notice the details and gradually understand what makes Vilnius so appealing.

Hike up to the Three Crosses

The Three Crosses stand on a hill just beyond the Old Town. To reach them, you climb a series of steps that take you above the city. It’s a short but steady walk.

At the top, you begin to see the city differently. The historic centre is clearly visible, surrounded by green areas and neighbourhoods. It’s a place people come to pause for a moment and look out over Vilnius. Later in the day, the light softens and the atmosphere feels calmer from above.

A different chapter of Vilnius

You might recognise the former Lukiškės Prison from series like Stranger Things or Chernobyl. Long before it became a filming location, this building played a very different role in the city’s history.

The change in atmosphere is noticeable as soon as you step inside. Narrow corridors lead past preserved cells and interrogation rooms that have remained largely unchanged. Moving through the building, you become aware of what took place here.

Near the entrance, a modern bar now occupies the hall. It forms a clear contrast with what once took place here. It may not be the first place that comes to mind on a city trip, but it adds perspective to your time in Vilnius.

A taste of Vilnius

Vilnius may be compact, but its food scene is full of character.

In the Old Town, casual spots like Smash Burger Lab show how simple concepts can be done exceptionally well. For something more refined, Restaurant Plus One combines a stylish interior with carefully presented dishes, while Bistro 18 is a favourite for fresh fish and seasonal flavours.

Mornings start slowly in cosy cafés such as Elska Café or Kitchen Coffee Vilnius, both loved by locals for quality coffee and a relaxed atmosphere.

As evening falls, restaurants fill with conversation and warm light spills onto the streets. They’re moments to pause, taste and enjoy the city a little longer.

It’s the kind of place you’re glad to return to after a day of exploring. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, breakfast is fresh and generous and the spa with sauna and hammam offers a quiet pause before heading out again.
