What to do in Kos?

1. The main city of Kos is a centre of cultural sites, such as the Kastro (an archaeological Museum), the Tree of Hippocrates and the Mosque of Gazi Hassan Pacha. If you haven’t had enough, you can view ancient ruins, such as houses, temples, baths and mosaics in various areas of the old town, but the absolute must remains the Asclepieion, the site of the ancient temple to the God of medicine.
2. The “Casa Romana” is also well worth a visit. This Greco-Roman villa has incredible mosaics. And don’t miss the ancient Odeon, where great musical competitions were held.
3. Finally, you can visit the many small villages scattered throughout Kos. Don’t miss Palio Pylio, Asfendiou, Kardamena and Kefalos, they make the perfect locations for taking pictures of your holiday in Greece!
4. Sunset lovers will want to head to the south of the peninsula, Moni Agiou Theologou, to admire the spectacular landscape and breathtaking skies!

• Travel information: Greece is part of the Schengen-zone, meaning that under normal circumstances, EU citizens may travel without a passport. Non-EU citizens must have a valid passport. Citizens of the following countries may enter Greece without a visa: Countries of the European Union, the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Citizens of other countries require a visa.

What to do and not do in Kos?

• Kos is an island that is known for respecting the environment, so please support this and don’t litter. Otherwise, you may have to pay a hefty fine.
• If you’re looking for the perfect gift or souvenir of your holiday in Greece, look no further! You’ll find excellent quality leather goods, shoes, pottery and carpets.
• You should always carry some cash with you because in the more remote villages, it will not always be possible to pay by card.

A few words of Greek

• Kalimera is the usual greeting in the morning, if you’re greeting someone in the afternoon or evening, say kalispera. Goodnight is kalinikta, do pay attention though as kalinikta is only used as a goodbye, never as a greeting. Going for drinks with friends? The Greeks don’t say cheers but yamas! Want to go out? Say Pame gia café. It literally means “Let’s go for a coffee” but it’s generally used to go out for drinks, not specifically coffee. If you have a particular Greek lady or gentleman in mind, this is the way to ask them out for a drink.

Cultural events

• Each year there is a wine festival in Mastichari. It’s an opportunity to taste only the best Greek wines, while dances are organised to entertain the curious.
• The Hippocrates Festival is unquestionably the biggest event on the island. Throughout the entire summer, you can enjoy art exhibitions and concerts and listen to fascinating stories.

When to go to Kos?

The island of Kos has a Mediterranean climate with mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. The best time to visit is therefore between June in mid-September. If you are susceptible to cold, you might want to bring along a light sweater as the wind can make temperatures feel cooler. However, don’t forget your sunglasses and your sunscreen, either.

What to eat in Kos?

If you want to taste the local specialties, go to the village of Andimahia. In the stalls of the local market, you’ll find mouth-watering goat cheeses, honey and jams.
