2. The magnificent Cathedral of Santa María, better known as La Seu, was built on the site of a Moorish mosque and is one of the most impressive Gothic cathedrals in Europe. It’s an eye-catching sight as you stroll along the Paseo Marítimo, which stretches some 5.5km, or look down at the city from the circular Bellver Castle.
3. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Serra de Tramuntana is a mountain range known for its incredible wildlife. It’s an ideal spot for hiking or cycling and is home to small, charming villages including Valldemosa and Deià. • Don’t just visit Mallorca during the busy summer months. If you want to enjoy the island’s Mediterranean climate without the crowds, come before or after summer. Winter is the best time for hiking; in spring, almond trees are in full bloom, covering the island with pink petals.
• Even though temperatures rise above 30°C during the summer months, it’s not a good idea to wander the streets of Palma in just your swimwear. Not only is it tasteless and inappropriate, it’s also banned by law and it may cost you a fine. So get dressed and spend your money on something more fun.
• Natives of Mallorca speak a variety of Catalan, also known as Mallorquí. Their second language is Spanish, but it is spoken and understood by everyone on the island. Many immigrants only speak Spanish so it’s useful to learn some basic phrases. If you want to give Mallorquí a try, you should be aware that there are a few differences between it and standard Catalan and that pronunciation can differ considerably. In any event, there’s no need to worry because English, French and German are spoken across the island.

It’s ideal for anyone who is lacto-intolerant! Ca’n Joan de S’Aigo is a great place to try this delicious snack with a cup of coffee, hot chocolate or homemade ice-cream.
• Pa amb oli (literally, bread with oil) is one of Mallorca’s most typical dishes. It’s made with basic ingredients which are combined to create something truly wonderful. Bread or toast is served with tomato slices, olive oil and local cheese, cured ham or chorizo: you won’t be able to get enough of it. You’re in luck: you can enjoy it at any time of day!
