        What to do in Mallorca?

        1. Palma de Mallorca is home to many extraordinary examples of architectural brilliance. Don’t forget to look up when strolling along the streets of this Balearic capital to see impressive buildings, built through the ages, including Edifici Casasayas, Gran Hotel, Can Forteza Rey and the Banys Arabs.
        2. The magnificent Cathedral of Santa María, better known as La Seu, was built on the site of a Moorish mosque and is one of the most impressive Gothic cathedrals in Europe. It’s an eye-catching sight as you stroll along the Paseo Marítimo, which stretches some 5.5km, or look down at the city from the circular Bellver Castle.
        3. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Serra de Tramuntana is a mountain range known for its incredible wildlife. It’s an ideal spot for hiking or cycling and is home to small, charming villages including Valldemosa and Deià. From Palma de Mallorca, you can take the historic Railway of Sóller, which winds its way through mountains and tunnels before arriving in the charming town of Sóller.
        4. Alcúdia and Pollensa are great holiday destinations if you’re travelling with kids. The old town of Alcúdia is surrounded by 13th century city walls and has a wide range of small restaurants and boutique shops, while Pollensa has a more relaxed feel and is an excellent choice for anyone who wants to spend days at the beach and to try their hand at water sports.
        5. Mallorca is home to some of the best beaches in Spain. From sandy coves to pebbled beaches, it’s not hard to find the perfect beach to suit you: Cala Mondragó, Port de Pollença, Cala Millor, Cala Mesquida and Es Trenc, to name just a few! Many of the beaches have white sand and shallow turquoise waters, making them ideal for children.
        6. Palma de Mallorca offers an eclectic mix of bars and nightclubs for any and every party animal. The city’s nightlife is lively all year round; during the summer, the island’s beach resorts offer plenty of choice. Looking for inspiration? PuroBeach, Nikki Beach, Balneario Illetas Beach and Anima Beach are just a few of the venues you’ll want to tick off your bucket list.

        Practical information for your trip

        • Brussels Airlines flights arrive and depart from Palma de Mallorca Airport (PNI), 9km east of the city centre of Palma.
        • Currency: The currency used in Mallorca is the euro. All major global credit and debit cards are accepted, but it’s always a good idea to have some cash on you.
        • Telephone calls and Wi-Fi: The country code for Spain is 0034 and the internal area code for Mallorca is 971. The full city code, including the 0, must always be dialled, even when calling within Mallorca itself. There are no public hotspots in Mallorca, but most restaurants, cafés, pubs, bars and hotels offer Wi-Fi, though you often need a password.
        • Electric sockets: plug type C and type F (two round pins), suitable for appliances of 230V – 50Hz.
        • Travel Information: Spain is a full Schengen member. Non-EU citizens need a valid passport with at least 6 valid months remaining. Make sure that children travelling with you have their own passport or ID card.

What to do and not do in Mallorca?

        • If you’re planning a long trip to Mallorca, don’t just stay on the island: take a boat or ship to visit other islands nearby. The uninhabited island of Cabrera is just a few kilometres off the southern coast of Mallorca and is home to fantastic wildlife.
        • Don’t just visit Mallorca during the busy summer months. If you want to enjoy the island’s Mediterranean climate without the crowds, come before or after summer. Winter is the best time for hiking; in spring, almond trees are in full bloom, covering the island with pink petals.
        • Even though temperatures rise above 30°C during the summer months, it’s not a good idea to wander the streets of Palma in just your swimwear. Not only is it tasteless and inappropriate, it’s also banned by law and it may cost you a fine. So get dressed and spend your money on something more fun.
        • Natives of Mallorca speak a variety of Catalan, also known as Mallorquí. Their second language is Spanish, but it is spoken and understood by everyone on the island. Many immigrants only speak Spanish so it’s useful to learn some basic phrases. If you want to give Mallorquí a try, you should be aware that there are a few differences between it and standard Catalan and that pronunciation can differ considerably. In any event, there’s no need to worry because English, French and German are spoken across the island.

Some useful expressions in Spanish and Mallorquí

          • Spanish: Hola, ¿cómo estás?
          • Mallorquí: Bon día, com va?
        • Bye!
          • Spanish: hasta luego / adiós
          • Mallorquí: adéu
        • Thank you
          • Spanish: gracias
          • Mallorquí: gracis
        • Please
          • Spanish: por favor
          • Mallorquí: per favor
        • I want… / I don’t want…
          • Spanish: Quiero… / No quiero…
          • Mallorquí: Vull… / No vull…
        • How much does it cost?
          • Spanish: ¿Cuánto cuesta?
          • Mallorquí: Quant és?
        • The bill please
          • Spanish: La cuenta, por favor
          • Mallorquí: Es compte, per favor
        • I like it
          • Spanish: me gusta
          • Mallorquí: m’agrada

        When to go to Mallorca?

Just like the rest of the Balearic archipelago, Mallorca has a Mediterranean climate with long, hot summers and mild winters. The best time to visit the island is during the summer months, but keep in mind that the island can get very crowded. In spring, the temperatures range between 17 and 24°C and rainfall is minimal. September and October are also perfect months for a laid-back beach getaway.

        What to eat in Mallorca?

The island of Mallorca offers truly delicious cuisine.

        • The soft sobrassada sausage is often eaten on rustic bread or as a tapa, served with a slice of local cheese.

        • The coca mallorquina is a simple, mouth-watering snack. Flatbread dough is topped with vegetables and baked in the oven; you’ll find it on sale in panaderías (bakeries) all over the island.
        • The ensaïmada, easily the most famous pastry from Mallorca, is a spiral-shaped pastry made with flour, eggs, water, sugar and pork lard (no butter here!). It’s ideal for anyone who is lacto-intolerant! Ca’n Joan de S’Aigo is a great place to try this delicious snack with a cup of coffee, hot chocolate or homemade ice-cream.
        • Pa amb oli (literally, bread with oil) is one of Mallorca’s most typical dishes. It’s made with basic ingredients which are combined to create something truly wonderful. Bread or toast is served with tomato slices, olive oil and local cheese, cured ham or chorizo: you won’t be able to get enough of it. You’re in luck: you can enjoy it at any time of day!
